Dear Friends

We hope your organization will become a member of SHARE. SHARE is the newly formed coalition of community, faith, environmental justice and climate action groups organized to stop the proposal to build two new fracked gas turbines on Sheridan Avenue in Albany. The project has statewide significance as it is proposed to power NYS government buildings.

Many of you signed on to our letter urging the Governor to reconsider the project. However, we felt we could not just add you to the SHARE membership without your express agreement

Membership in SHARE is open to any organization who agrees with our mission statement and is willing to put in work to help us accomplish our mission.
Sheridan Hollow Alliance for Renewable Energy’s mission is to stop the Sheridan Hollow fossil fuel power plant and use the state funds dedicated to this proposed project for a renewable energy solution.
Member organizations will be listed on SHARE’s letterhead and will be able to participate in decision-making for our coalition. SHARE meets monthly in Albany, we hope you will join us. We are excited about all the groups that have worked together over the last few months to oppose this project. This neighborhood is a classic example of environmental injustice and this project would lock the neighborhood into another thirty years of toxic air pollution. Already the state has been forced to agree to do a full environmental impact statement (EIS). Now we are demanding that the state issue a new Request for Proposals (RFP) to solicit ideas on how to build a clean renewable energy future. A renewable energy expert has come forward to suggest a geothermal solution to heating and cooling the state buildings.

This project is a great way for the Governor to show he is committed to stopping more fossil fuel infrastructure and emissions, and instead provide a model for other communities for how to provide energy (heating/cooling and electricity) in a clean, renewable way.

Sheridan Hollow Alliance for Renewable Energy SHARE- Join us!

To: Organizations that joined the call for renewable alternatives for the proposed Sheridan Hollow gas power plant:

Thank you for signing SHARE’s letter (see below) that we delivered to the governor in September in response to the proposed siting of a co-generation fracked gas power plant in Albany’s environmental justice, Sheridan Hollow neighborhood. Our letter called for a full Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), and for a Request for Proposal (RFP) to power the Empire State Plaza with renewable energy.

Much has happened since then. We wanted to give an update for those of you who haven’t been following the issue closely and to ask your organization to become a member of SHARE.

First, the updates:

·        The New York Power Authority (NYPA) announced that New York will conduct a full EIS. This is in direct response to our letter and concerns expressed by community members at a number of meetings with NYPA.

·        A noted engineer, Jay Egg, published an article which explains why “it is reasonable to assume that geothermal heating and cooling can be accomplished at the Empire State Plaza.” Here’s the link. http://www.renewableenergyworld.com/articles/2017/11/chp-project-for-empire-state-plaza-misses-the-mark.html. That means we have presented a real concrete solution that addresses the state’s need for power while not harming the climate and the neighborhood.

·        Thursday (November 16), SHARE held a successful press conference in front of the old ANSWERS trash-to-steam plant where community members called for renewable solutions not another toxic powerplant. Here are some news links:
